What is golden hour?
The time just after sunrise and just before sunset when the sun is low, its light comes through more of the atmosphere, and everything turns warm and soft, with long shadows. Photographers plan around it. Here it means the sun between 6° above and 4° below the horizon, which is roughly the hour around sunrise and sunset in mid-latitudes, longer in winter and nearer the poles.
What is the difference between golden hour and blue hour?
Blue hour is the twilight on the other side of golden hour: before it in the morning and after it in the evening, with the sun 4° to 6° below the horizon. The sky turns deep blue and city lights come on. It’s short: 10 to 20 minutes in most places, under 10 near the equator, and longer nearer the poles.
What is the difference between sunrise and first light?
Sunrise is when the top of the sun clears the horizon. First light, or civil dawn, comes about half an hour earlier in most places, when the sun is 6° below the horizon and there is enough light to see outdoors. Nautical and astronomical twilight are earlier still.
