Questions

Where is it daytime right now?

Right now it’s daytime in Honolulu, San Francisco, Mumbai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Sydney and Auckland, and night in Mexico City, New York, São Paulo, London, Lagos, Cairo, Moscow and Dubai.

Why is the line between day and night curved?

The Earth is tilted about 23.4° toward or away from the sun as it orbits, so the edge of sunlight crosses a flat map as a wave. It is straight up and down only at the equinoxes in March and September.

What do the bands of shade mean?

Each step darker is the sun six degrees further below the horizon: civil, nautical and then astronomical twilight, and finally full night.
