Questions

Where is it golden hour right now?

Golden hour now in Honolulu, Moscow and Cairo. 95 cities are in it: 2 at dusk and 93 at dawn.

What is golden hour?

The time just after sunrise and just before sunset when the sun is low, its light comes through more of the atmosphere, and everything turns warm and soft, with long shadows. Here it means the sun between 6° above and 4° below the horizon, a common convention among photographers.

How long does golden hour last?

It depends on where you are and the time of year. Near the equator the sun drops steeply and golden hour lasts about 40 minutes; in mid-latitudes it’s about an hour, longer in winter; near the poles the sun can stay low for most of a winter’s day.

Why does the golden band move?

It’s the ring around the Earth where the sun is low, on either side of the line between day and night: dawn on one side, dusk on the other. As the Earth turns it sweeps west, about 15° an hour, so every place passes through it twice a day.

What is the difference between golden hour and blue hour?

Blue hour is the twilight on the far side of golden hour, with the sun 4° to 6° below the horizon: before golden hour in the morning and after it in the evening. The sky turns deep blue and city lights come on. It’s short, often under 20 minutes.
